Tim, I am a COMS investor. Have bought and sold the stock quite a few time the past year. Last time I bought was at 38 before the "MERGER ANNOUNCMENT." So I feel your pain.
But, we have to be realistic. Technology stocks can't survive buy themselves. 3COM would only be in the network bus. and USRX would only be in the modem bus. Together they can develop a "Total package."
This year you should see quite a few computer co. merging. GATE, DELL, CPQ.
So the industry is slowing down a bit. Of course it would. All companies and ISP have all the equipment they need. But just like these same co. upgrade their PCs withing a year they will upgrade modems, hubs, network cards etc.. These co. generally stick with the same vendor.
I am a Systems Engineer. We are running DELL computers with 3COM ethernet cards. When we upgrade to newer and faster cards we will stick with 3COM.
We will not go with Intel because of the relationship we have with 3COM. 1. It is a good company and 2 the service is excellant. Even if Intel dropped their price and the cards are $30 cheaper. So!! We look for quality. Not saying that Intel isn't quality, but when you want a corvette you don't go to a Ford dealer.
And as far as Modems. All of are modems are USRX. All of our customers USRX modems. Why? Reputaition. Lucecnt, and other modem wanna-be's will not survive. Again, if you want a corvette you don't go to a Ford dealer.
You buy something from someone who has experience in it for a long time. Not because they feel they can make a card as well. |
