Newbridge Builds China's Largest Data Network for
Guandong PTA: Multi Million Dollar Expansion to Link 100
Counties and Cities

HONG KONG, CHINA--Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today
announced a multi million dollar contract to expand Guangdong Post
and Telecommunications Administration (GPTA)'s province-wide
network -- creating the largest data network in China. For this
second round of investment in what is expected to be a multi
phased network rollout, GPTA has once again selected the Newbridge
36170 multiservices platform, the market's leading broadband
switching platform. The expanded network will consolidate existing
frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) services onto a
single, unified platform that will span more than 100 counties and
cities in Guangdong Province.

"Newbridge Networks is providing us with a highly scalable,
reliable platform that enables us to significantly reduce our
operating costs and, unlike our competitors, offer a broad range
of premium quality voice, data and multimedia services across a
single, unified platform," said Cui Xun, director of GPTA. "As a
long-standing Newbridge customer, we are extremely satisfied with
the Company's dedication, professionalism and responsiveness.
Selecting Newbridge for the expansion of our network was the
logical choice."

The Newbridge(r)36170 multiservices switch has to date been
installed in more than 350 service providers' networks worldwide.
Its unmatched flexibility and scalability enables GPTA to meet the
growing demand for high performance data services, and to
seamlessly link corporate customers with government agencies
within the province and throughout China. Newbridge is also
providing the 3600 MainStreet(r) Bandwidth Manager and the 3630
MainStreet Primary Rate Multiplexer, a versatile multiplexer that
integrates a range of voice, data, video and local area network
(LAN) interfaces into a single, compact platform.

GPTA's entire network is managed end-to-end by the industry
leading Newbridge 46020 network and service management suite. The
46020 enables network and service management across multiple
technologies and services, including Internet protocol (IP), ATM,
frame relay and time division multiplexing, and is the key to
delivering faster service provision and lower cost of ownership.

"We are delighted to be working once again with GPTA, a
progressive service provider that is committed to meeting its
customers' ongoing needs," said Roger Fung, Executive Vice
President, Asia Pacific, Newbridge Networks. "The solution we are
providing has been designed with GPTA to meet its stringent
communications requirements in a very competitive market. We
believe it offers GPTA a clear competitive advantage by enabling
it to be first to market with value-added services."

By the end of 1999, GPTA's network was extended to the city of

Dongguan, one of the largest cities in Guangdong Province. The
remainder of the network expansion is expected to be completed by
early 2000.

Guangdong Post and Telecommunications Administration is a number
one player in the provincial PTAs of China. Its revenues,
including Guangdong Mobile were U.S. $4.8 billion in 1998. GPTA
offers voice, narrowband and broadband data, multimedia and
Internet services. News and information are available at
