A tentative go for MMDS

After buying up a vast quantity of MMDS spectrum licenses in early 1999, Sprint targeted the second half of 2000 for launching broadband wireless service based on MMDS. But that was before the carrier agreed to be swallowed up by rival MCI WorldCom, which bought a bunch of MMDS licenses of its own last year. With more than $1 billion invested collectively in MMDS, it's a good bet that MCI will make some progress by year's end. If there is a fly in the MMDS ointment, it's the dearth of equipment available to make two-way MMDS work. Cisco Systems gave important credence to the MMDS market late last year by announcing plans to enter, though development remains. And pesky technical problems inherent in MMDS and wireless technology, such as line-of-sight issues and interference from the weather, still must be overcome.
