[Pacific Gateway Exchange Through Its Onyx Subsidiary Announces Flagship Customers for IP Data Network]
Onyx Networks Subsidiary Launches Global Network
BURLINGAME, Calif., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Pacific Gateway Exchange, Inc. today announced its flagship customers on its IP data network, which is operated by its wholly owned IP subsidiary, Onyx Networks, Inc. (formerly PGExpress). The customers will include Globe Telecom, the number two telecom carrier in the Philippines; interQ, the largest independent ISP in Japan and the first to be publicly traded; and StarNet/MegaPOP, the largest independent wholesale dial-up provider worldwide. Revenue is expected to be generated from these customers shortly. Along with these leading global network service providers (NSPs), Onyx expects to add high end corporate customers to its base, such as the Reston Design Group of Virginia, USA, who are looking for the high performance offered by Onyx's cutting edge, "application-aware"(TM) IP network.
"We will be delighted to have such strong global customers on our IP Network", said Mr. Howard A. Neckowitz, President and CEO of Pacific Gateway. "With the global network in service and our global data centers becoming operational during 2000, we are set to play a major role in the expansion of the Internet beyond the US borders."
Globe Telecom has chosen Onyx Networks' high speed dedicated access product to provide world class service to their domestic Internet market in the Philippines. The decision to house their G-Net Internet Service on the Onyx backbone was based on the redundant architecture of the network, high throughput via OC3/OC12/OC48 capacity, and cutting edge performance application enhancements such as the Inktomi Traffic Server(TM) product. Globe Telecom is also evaluating additional capacity with Onyx Networks.
Another outstanding global NSP which has chosen Onyx Networks is interQ, currently the leading independent ISP in Japan. In August of 1999, interQ completed its IPO on the JASDAQ and became the first independent ISP to become a public company on the Japanese stock market. Over the past 4 years interQ has built up a customer base with over 180,000 registered email users, and a variety of products to meet a wide range of consumer needs. Since the launch of its initial Internet connectivity services in December of 1995, interQ has built its network from a single POP with 30 ports and a mere 128kbps backbone, to a national network with over 90Mbps of upstream connectivity and almost 10,000 access ports. interQ currently runs a network of 112 regional POPs, the largest independently run ISP network in Japan.
On the U.S. front, StarNet(TM) has been aggressively building the largest 56K/v.90 network in the world since 1995. Because StarNet is expanding their service offering to the Asia Pacific Region, they selected Onyx Networks to provide dedicated high speed IP access, colocation data services, and local ISDN via Pacific Gateway Exchange's relationship with NTT. The ability for Onyx to provide the full turn-key solution with existing expertise in the Japanese market and to deliver quality service to StarNet in the domestic U.S. market were major deciding factors in the final contract negotiations. Onyx looks to expand its relationship with StarNet to other regions of the world including Sydney, Australia, and London, England.
Reston Design Group (RDG) represents the high end corporate customer in which Onyx seeks to add value to its customer portfolio. RDG provides a full range graphic design and strategic marketing services, specializing in "concept to completion" development of integrated corporate marketing-communications programs that include printed materials, Websites, and exhibits. RDG combines solid design principles with cutting-edge technology to create marketing materials with visual and intellectual impact.
Network expansion to Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Sydney are on the horizon, with Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf locations being launched in Europe. To enhance customer satisfaction with hyperdrive speed to Web content around the world, U.S. domestic sites with large numbers of Internet content providers, including Seattle, Boston, Atlanta and Miami, will be added to the current roster of U.S. sites served by Onyx. These cities include: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, New York and Washington, D.C. By 2002, the Onyx Networks IP backbone is expected to include 75 of the world's leading financial and business centers in the Asia Pacific, European and Latin American regions.
