TSM buying Worldwide Semiconductor FOR $5-8 billions

By CBS MarketWatch
Last Update: 1:48 AM ET Jan 11, 2000

TAIPEI (CBS.MW) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM: news, msgs) said it agreed to acquire Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. in a stock swap valued at $5 billion to $8 billion. The hefty price tag underscores tight capacity in TSMC's niche business -- contract manufacturing -- and the rising stock valuations of manufacturers as chip designers and old-line semiconductor makers tap outside suppliers instead of building costly new plants themselves. The acquisition -- TSMC's second multibillion-dollar transaction in less than two weeks -- will boost its capacity by about 14 percent and preserve its lead in a contract-manufacturing market that will account for 12 percent of the semiconductor industry's total business by 2003, compared with 5 percent in 1998, according to a forecast by Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
