Software Announced For X2-Upgradeable PC Cards

SALT LAKE CITY, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Robotics (Nasdaq: USRX), the
computer industry's leading PC Card manufacturer, today announced two programs
to allow mobile users to realize the benefits of the new x2 56kbps Technology.
Through the 'xChange to x2' program, customers who purchase Megahertz(r)-brand
x2 PC Cards will be able to receive rebates of up to $100 when they trade-in
their old PC card, making the jump to 56K technology much easier. U.S.
Robotics also announced a $60 upgrade for 'x2-upgradeable' PC cards delivered
earlier this year.
"The U.S. Robotics x2 Technology offers enormous benefits to mobile users,
bringing the fastest and most reliable download speeds available today over
standard analog telephone lines for superior access to the Internet and
corporate LAN's," said Robert Bauer, vice president of marketing for U.S.
Robotics Mobile Communications Corp., a subsidiary of U.S. Robotics
Corporation. "Now, with our PC Card upgrade programs, we're helping mobile
users make the jump to 56K as simple and affordable as possible."

xChange to x2 - it's easy!
The 'xChange to x2' program allows buyers who have purchased Megahertz(R),
Sportster(R) or Courier(TM) brand 28.8 and 33.6 kbps modems between Oct. 16,
1996 and June 1, 1997 to receive rebates of up to $100 when they purchase
qualifying new x2 cards before September 30, 1997.

A $50 rebate is available for those who have either:
-- Purchased a new U.S. Robotics 28.8 or 33.6 kbps PC Card modem prior to
October 16, 1996,
-- Ever purchased a new U.S. Robotics 14.4 kbps PC Card, or
-- Ever purchased a 14.4, 28.8, or 33.6 kbps PC Card from any other
manufacturer.

Rebate forms can be obtained beginning in May from a U.S. Robotics Sales
Representative, through the company's FaxBack service or from the U.S.
Robotics x2 website-www.x2.usr.com. When customers send their current modem,
receipts and the rebate form, U.S. Robotics will send the customer a check for
either $50 or $100, depending on which rebate they qualify for.

Upgrade to x2
Software upgrades to 56 kbps for existing users of the 'x2-upgradeable'
Megahertz models XJ1336 and CC1336, and the Sportster model SP1336 PC card
modems will be available in May with an estimated selling price of $60. This
easy-to-install upgrade can be purchased from the U.S. Robotics x2 website or
from selected retailers across North America.

x2 Technology Benefits
U.S. Robotics modems with x2 Technology allow users access to the
Internet, corporate Intranets and on-line connections over regular phone lines
nearly twice as fast as those currently available.
"Worldwide support for x2 Technology is overwhelming," explained Bauer.
"More than 500 regional and global ISPs and on-line service providers have
announced support for our 56K Technology, with more than 225 already on-line.
People from all parts of the world will soon be using x2 Technology to
download graphics-intensive files and other data at nearly double the current
maximum analog modem speed."
All Megahertz-brand PC Card modems come with a five-year warranty and
access to unlimited technical support (801-320-7777). For sales
information, customers can contact U.S. Robotics Mobile Communications

NOTE: Currently, FCC rules limit the signal level that digitally
connected server equipment can transmit into the digital portion of the
network phone lines. Based on product testing to date, the result of this
limitation is that the current top transmission speed in the downstream link
is 53.3 Kbps. Actual speed may vary depending on line conditions. Uploading
of information occurs at speeds up to 28.8 kbps. An x2 capable modem, x2
capable phone line and an x2 capable service provider are required for high
speed downloads.
