NorthPoint Communications Announces Fourth-Quarter And Year-End Operational Statistics Broadband Leader Doubles DSL Subscriber Base SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- NorthPoint Communications (Nasdaq: NPNT -news), a leading provider of digital subscriber line (DSL)-based broadband services, today announced fourth-quarter and year-end 1999 operational statistics. NorthPoint's results are highlighted by a doubling of its subscriber base over the third quarter of 1999 -- the fastest growth rate among competitive DSL service providers -- and greatly accelerated expansion of its nationwide broadband network. The number of NorthPoint subscribers doubled during the fourth quarter, increasing from 11,800 as of September 30, 1999 to more than 23,500 as of December 31, 1999. Following on the doubling of its subscriber base in the prior two quarters, NorthPoint's fourth-quarter subscriber base doubling establishes it as the industry leader in terms of percentage line growth among national DSL service providers. As of December 31, 1999, NorthPoint had secured collocation space in more than 1,560 central offices. Fully operational central offices increased more than 50 percent during the quarter to 1,027 at December 31, 1999 from 683 at September 30, 1999. The number of homes and businesses passed increased 41 percent during the quarter to approximately 31 million from 22 million at September 30, 1999. NorthPoint currently offers service in nearly 2,000 cities and towns. As of December 31, 1999, the company served 33 major metropolitan areas -- exceeding its plan to serve 28 markets by the end of the year -- spanning 62 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). NorthPoint recently announced plans to expand its network to more than 60 markets, or 110 MSAs, serving approximately half of all U.S. homes and businesses by the end of this year.
