Spectrian Supports Wireless Data Through Agreement With Metricom
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan 11, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Spectrian Corp.
(Nasdaq:SPCT) announced today that it has entered into an agreement
with Metricom Inc., (Nasdaq:MCOM) a leading provider of mobile data
networking and technology.

Under the agreement, Spectrian will provide ultra linear power
amplifiers in the 2.3 gigahertz (GHz) WCS band in support of Merticom's
Ricochet 128 kilobits per second (kbps) launch scheduled for this
summer.

With data transmission speed of 128 kbps, Ricochet lets users stay
connected to information while outside the confines of an office. Three
of the main components for the Ricochet system include end-user modems,
micro cell radios and wired access points. Spectrian's amplifiers will
be utilized in the outbound broadcasts from Metricom's WCS wired access
points.

To use the system, Ricochet users simply hook the modem into their
laptop or other portable computing device. The modems are outfitted
with small antennas that exchange data with the micro cell radios
mounted on city streetlight and utility poles. These "poletop" radios
communicate with each other and local wired access points using a
meshed frequency-hopping network architecture, which is interconnected
to a wired local network and the national Internet backbone. In this
way, customers can stay connected to data anywhere in coverage areas,
without being tied to a wall jack, even while moving at speeds up to 70
miles an hour.

"We are very excited to be involved in this aspect of wireless data,"
said Dr. Garrett Garrettson, Spectrian's president and chief executive
officer. "Although wireless data is still in its infancy, it will
certainly be a significant factor in the growth of the wireless
industry and we are pleased to partner with a well-recognized
organization like Metricom."

The contract comes after a long-standing relationship of working with
and supporting Metricom as they defined the technical requirements for
their new 128 kbps wireless mobile data systems.
