Once, in the Middle Ages, there was a settled faith, and a sense of man's place in the universe, and of the solidarity of Christendom. Now, with diversity of belief and the disenchantment wrought by science, the solace has been withdrawn, and we have little sense of our place, nor of fellowship. A melancholy has settled on the world: no longer is it filled with fairies and holy places and the awful drama of Redemption, but instead, it is indeterminant, and a place of contention among those of varied speculative ideologies.......I take it that that is the main theme of the poem......
