Leveling the playing field

At this time, TrueVision utilizes an excimer laser developed by VISX (VISX), which until recently had a virtual monopoly on the laser equipment market. Last year, rival Japanese laser manufacturer Nidek filed and won an antitrust lawsuit against VISX, sending the heavyweight's stock tumbling. With the judgment, the playing field will dramatically change for laser centers such as TrueVision. Up until now, VISX was the only manufacturer available, and therefore set its price accordingly. Those purchasing VISX equipment not only had to pay a hefty one-time fee, but also had to kick back $250 to VISX for each procedure performed on its machines. No longer. With competitors such as Nidek anxious to dive into the market with no recurring procedure fees, steep prices will become a thing of the past.
