Genetic discoveries...

I am probably one of the few people who do not like the risk of investing in some of the new companies doing genetic research. Some of these companies could be compared to some "dot.com" companies...companies without income, but who believe they will profit with their future discoveries.

I am 100% hopeful that these companies succeed in making wonderful discoveries that will change the course of many people's lives. However, I am doubtful about how quickly these discoveries can be "put to work" to make a difference in medical problems the world deals with today. I think the true results of these discoveries are maybe 5-10 years away. There is no guarantee that the discoveries will work, so investing in these companies is investing in your faith in their work. If these companies do make a difference, then the rewards will be huge for those who invest. I just hope that people invest in these companies carefully....just like they would invest carefully in any Internet company without earnings.

The Human Genome Project which began in 1990 was started as a very altruistic project. It is an open "world" project with the goal of sharing ideas, and helping to prevent duplication of research effort of those involved in genome research. Most of the new companies are no longer involved with this project, and research/and duplication is happening. From talking with two "textbook names" in the field of Human Genetics over Christmas, they both felt some disappointment with the amount of time needed to apply these discoveries to problems affecting people today.

Just FYI...I'd be very selective about the companies where I'd chose to invest, as I think these companies are not yet "a sure thing".
