Windbond, this is a press release from 9/96. They were showing this chip at a show in Tiawan, in Dec. It's not AC3, yet, and lacks integration of function other than decode. Looks like they want to be a DVD-ROM player......................................

Winbond Announces Single-Chip MPEG-2 Decoder
MPEG-2 PC add-on boards using Winbond W9922MF single-chip MPEG-2 A/V System Decorder <Picture>
Winbond Electronics Corp., a Taiwan-based semiconductor design and production company, is committed to becoming a leading player in digital audio and video semiconductor products. Over the past three years, Winbond has developed a series of MPEG-1 audio and video chips for both PC MPEG-1 board and Video CD player applications.
MPEG-2 A/V/System Decoder
Winbond recently announced the W9922MF single-chip MPEG-2 A/V System Decoder, the first in a family of MPEG-2 products. The W9922MF decodes MPEG program, video and audio streams. The W9922MF video decoder supports MPEG-2 main profile/ main level. Its audio decoder supports MPEG layer I and layer II. It decompresses and synchronizes compressed data and produces digital video and audio data for external analog conversion. The W9922MF is suitable for set-top boxes and digital video in PC applications.
W9922MF Description
The W9922MF is a dual RISC processor device. The operating sequence for MPEG decoding is embedded in the two decoding coprocessors, the video RISC and audio/system RISC. These two processors execute individual microprograms to complete the overall decoding process. The decoding coprocessor includes specific functional blocks such as a VLD, dequantizer, IDCT, and motion compensator. A full-screen bitmap OSD (on-screen display), supports up to 16 colors per pixel with a color palette of sixteen thousand colors.
The W9922MF supports error correction, video post filters, 2 to 3 pull down, and macro functions for VCR-like modes. TV interlace and VGA progressive display modes for both NTSC and PAL systems are also supported. Digital video output can be selected in 24-bit RGB or 8/16/24-bit YCbCr formats. For both PAL and NTSC TV systems, only 16 Mbits of DRAM (4 chips of 256K *16 audioDRAM) are needed. Direct frame buffer access (i.e., writes or captures done through the host processor) is possible. The W9922MF outputs two audio channels to external DACs in conventional audio PCM formats. Individual L/R channel mute control and volume adjustment functions are included.
The W9922MF provides two host interfaces, an 8-bit micro-processor 8051 series bus interface and a 32-bit PCI bus interface. The chip operates at 40.5 MHz. It is available in a 208-pin plastic QFP package. Samples of the W9922MF will be available in November this year.
MPEG-2 on PC
An MPEG-2 PCI bus PC add-on board is available. This add-on board can decode MPEG-2 bit streams from the PCI bus and display video on the VGA monitor. The MPEG-2 video module, based on the VMI (Video Module Interface) architecture, is also available. The video module implemented by the W9922MF chip can be mounted on any PC graphics card supporting the VMI bus. This architecture makes it possible to provide low-cost, high-quality MPEG-2 video on a PC. The video module*s functions include video and graphics overlay, video frame resizing, and frame rate conversion.
New Products for DVD Players and Set-top Boxes
The W9922MF provides Winbond with a base technology to use in developing a series of MPEG-2 audio and video products. Future products will include the W9922AF, a dedicated MPEG-2 chip for DVD (digital video disc) players that also supports sub-picture and Dolby AC-3 audio, and the W9922SF, a single chip for set-top box audio and video decoding. These two chips will be available next year. <Picture><Picture> <Picture>
