Lizzie, Social Security is an issue that people, in general, don't have the training or expertise to grapple with, and most people don't know the simple facts. The percentage of people who think that everyone has a Social Security account with their contributions in it is more than half. Most people aren't capable of dealing with issues intellectually, and only have emotional responses, and the public debate on Social Security is a prime example.
