I don't normally visit this thread, but I've got to tell you about something that just happened to me. About a month ago, I mailed an account cancellation to MBNA on a Visa card I rarely used as part of end-of-millennium housecleaning on my part.

So today I get a call from them offering to lower my interest rate. I don't think they ever called me in the 10 or so years I had the card (although I'm not sure it was MBNA when I opened it -- it might have been somebody they bought out). I explained to the caller that the account should have been closed. He said there was no record of the cancellation in my account file, and said he'd put me through to the department that handles that kind of thing. The next thing I know I'm on hold. The music was ok, so I just put it on speakerphone and waited the requisite LONG TIME. Cheerful voice: "How may I help you?" Well, I started to explain what had happened, and about halfway through my first paragraph, "click." THEY HUNG UP ON ME!

Are they running a scam to keep accounts, even inactive ones, on the books as long as possible to make their numbers sound good, or what's going on?

JMHO.
