i haven't thought through that question in some time. i have read several hundred books on the market but one or two books don't jump out to me as "rookie" books to decide an investment style.

i'll give you some random thoughts.

1. look around si and spot people that make sense to you. ask them questions. if you are hesitant to do so, send the people you want to ask questions private messages and say that you are new to investing. many people around here are helpful.

2. do you invest in mutual funds? i would suggest that a "rookie" buy into a mutual fund or two and read the materials that mutual funds publish as a starting point. i suggest vanguard mutual funds due to the quality and strength of the organization and particularly their philosophy of keeping investor costs to a minimum. in all mutual funds, costs are passed on to investors. the less the better as there is more for the investor to keep. vanguard.com

3. do you watch financial television like cnbc, cnnfn, bloomberg? be on the look out for off hours shows, particularly weekends where analysts and experts offer more in depth explanation of their views. sometimes there is a lot of jargon tossed around with which you may not be familiar. not to worry. let items you don't understand pass, and focus on what you can understand. the quantity of the understandable items will increase over time.

4. try these threads Subject 31996
Subject 25180

not the easiest to understand, but very nice people that will answer your questions.
