COM DEV awarded supply contract with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation

CAMBRIDGE, ON, Jan. 12 /CNW/ - COM DEV International Ltd. (TSE:CDV) today
announced that its Space Group has been awarded a supply contract by
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO), to supply microwave equipment for the
OPTUS C1 program. This contract was included in a general announcement made by
the company on November 15, 1999.
Optus C1 is a high-powered satellite to be used for commercial and
defense purposes by Cable & Wireless Optus and the Australian Department of
Defense. Optus C1 is a third generation system designed to replace an existing
spacecraft in the Optus communications constellation. The satellite will
provide advanced communications coverage for Australia, New Zealand and Asia,
and the Australian Defence Forces, when it is launched in 2002.
Under the terms of the contract, COM DEV will provide X-band, Ku-band and
Ka-band equipment. This program extends the working relationship between MELCO
and COM DEV and further strengthens COM DEV's penetration of the lucrative
Ka-Band market.
Along with its other well known business ventures, MELCO is also a
leading spacecraft prime contractor, spacecraft integrator and earth station
supplier with an expanding role in the worldwide commercial communications
market. MELCO has a broad list of customers including government
organizations, private communications firms, various consortia, and INTELSAT.
In addition, MELCO produces a wide range of subsystems and components
including antennas, solar panels, amplifiers, receivers, oscillators and ion
thrusters.
Canadian-based COM DEV International is the largest Canadian-owned
designer, manufacturer and distributor of space and ground-based wireless
products and subsystems through its two divisions: the Space Group and the
Wireless Group. COM DEV employs more than 1,100 people in facilities in
Ontario, New Brunswick, the United States, the United Kingdom and China.

satellite prime contractors for use in earth science and commercial

networks. These products are sold primarily to major PCS wireless equipment
vendors.
