"It's time we bought in"

"When it comes to electronic banking, like automatically
depositing paycheques, using ATMs and banking online,
Canadians are light years ahead of anyone in the world," remarks
Thorne, a portfolio manager with Caldwell Securities Ltd.

"But when it comes to new technologies, like shopping via the
Internet, Canadians are falling behind."

Part of the problem is that Canadian firms on the leading edge of
this new technology have had to go to the U.S. to get venture
capital or seed money.

"The financial community in Canada is more interested in doing an
underwriting of Eaton's at $15 a share than they are in supporting
new hi-tech companies," he said.

Yet, in the U.S., this new technology has created more than 30
million new jobs. Thorne claims it's not just Canada's high taxes
that are forcing our best and brightest graduates to head to the
States. "That's where the best high-paying jobs are."
