John- As I mentioned before, I was literally the first, in my area, to order up GTE's(an ILEC of all things) Worldwind cable modem service. Immediately after I had been the first to order up Time Warner's RoadRunner cable modem service.

With both installs, it was borderline comical. I had hoardes of trucks out here and dozens of techs. They stayed for days and days. I literally had 10 set-top boxes brought in by GTE before we even got the TV signal displaying. Not counting the modems I've been through for my Internet hook-up.

But as I understand it, today(over a year later) a consumer can pick up the phone, and in a one shot truck roll, both GTE and Roadrunner delivers on their promise. This is how my second install of GTE Worldwind worked(I'm on GTE's system now).

So IMHO, it's just the learning curves a lot of companies are going through. Whether it's DSL, LMDS, or HFC bringing in the broadband data pipe. I think all are just going through the pain of introducing a new technology.

I think the real winners and loser won't be known for a few more years. And that is when the dollar figures are tallied up and/or an access technology just plain fails to scale. --MikeM(From Florida)
