MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 1997--Octel Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:OCTL) today announced that its Unified Messenger(TM) product has received the Best Voice Messaging Product award at the Electronic Messaging Association `97 Conference, the messaging industry's premier annual gathering.

Conference attendees who voted for the product include messaging product customers, vendors, buyers and key influencers.

Octel, the world's largest provider of voice messaging, launched its Unified Messenger product in February of this year. Unified Messenger allows users to manage both their e-mail and voice mail messages from either a computer or a telephone. Messages can be reviewed, replied to, forwarded and deleted using whichever medium the user prefers. E-mail may even be reviewed over the telephone via Unified Messenger's text-to-speech capability.

"Octel is honored to have been selected by EMA `97 attendees as having the best voice messaging product," said Lynn Conlon, vice president and general manager, Octel Client/Server Software Division. "The marketplace response to Unified Messenger has been very positive, and this award further validates our decision to unify voice mail and e-mail at both the server and client level."

The EMA `97 Messaging Product Excellence Award winners were announced at the Messaging Excellence Awards Gala, held at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Messaging awards were chosen from EMA exhibitors' products that have been launched thus far in 1997.

"As the sponsor of the industry's premier convention for messaging products, the Electronic Messaging Association congratulates Octel for winning the best voice messaging product award," said Victor Perra, president and chief executive officer of the Electronic Messaging Association.

Octel Unified Messenger is also a nominee for Network Computing's "Well Connected" award, which will be given out this spring.
