Veeco Receives Over $2 Million in Orders for Flat Panel Display Surface Profilers
PLAINVIEW, NY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 12, 2000--Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: VECO - news) today announced an over $2 million blanket order for multiple units of its Dektak OSP-1100 flat panel display surface profilers from its distributor ULVAC Japan, Ltd. The profilers will be shipped to major flat panel display customers in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan during the next two years. The profilers are designed and manufactured by Veeco Metrology Group's Santa Barbara operation.

According to Don Kania, Ph.D., V.P. and G.M. of Veeco Metrology Santa Barbara, ''The OSP-1100 was developed in response to the industry's move to larger panel sizes. We believe that the market for this tool should grow over the next few years, driven by end-market uses of flat panel screens for PCs, televisions, and hand held devices such as games, mobile phones, pagers and palmtops. As the largest supplier of equipment to the flat panel industry, ULVAC is uniquely qualified to sell and support these tools.''

The Dektak OSP-1100, which was co-developed by Veeco and ULVAC, leads the industry with its capacity to handle large flat panel displays measuring up to 1100mm x 1100mm. The system is primarily used for measuring thickness of thin film transistors (TFT) and RGB color filters to control the flat panel display manufacturing process.
