The article was very specific wrt to "cable modems". However cable modem functionality will be combined into residential gateways or into the set top box...still cable access. So there is no net impact to companies like BRCM - the silicon is still going to be required.

where the article is wrong is wrt DSL. DSL being deployed today is ADSL. While ADSL is fine for data and voice access it is not capable of supporting broadcast quality video and therefore the impact to cable access will be almost nil.
