I don't think you understand the economics of the business. The name of the game (if you are not the dominant player) is to commoditize your enemies strengths by turning his business model upside down. Give away his cash cow, thereby compressing the price to zero and profit from resultant, but ancillary requirements. For MSFT vs. NSCP, MSFT gave away the browser and benefitted from NT server sales and COM/ASP architecture market share.

AOL will soon succumb to the commoditization of the ISP model (free ISPs) and soon even broadband (Free DSL). AOL will (if they don't stumble) survive by transforming their business model to partake in disparate revenue streams.
