Warning: Soapbox peanut gallery opinions...

You know folks, I have heard the countless interviews and predictions from the AOL/TW merger. Today I heard the interview of Case and Levin on MacNeal/Lair on PBS. It clearly appeared to me that the two of them were trying to explain how this merger will bring on dramatic revolutionary changes of the way people live and work and interact. They even tried to convince the audience that this new entity will have the consumer in mind ahead of profit/shareholders. Their several desperate examples of how the TV appliance will now become completely interactive with the content, will be a result of this merger.

Maybe its just me, but, I was starting to actually heckle the interview (although no one could hear me) as such Pie-in-the-sky predictions. Here are two companies that do not have competencies and control (yet) of Television appliance technologies to turn non-interactive TV's into interactive devices that allow interaction with the displayed content, and yet they are making all these wild predictions as a result of their merger.

I am not saying that this wont happen sometime in the future (in fact it is starting to happen already), but, not as a direct result of this merger. These two companies first have a TON of alignment to address (look at Compaq and DEC as an example of a whale swallowing another whale - and that is small compared to this deal). There is a ton of culture clash between TW and AOL (legacy vs new-aged). And AOL is finally getting onto high-speed Internet that has already been around for 2 years (I have been on Cable modem with @Home for over 1 year already).

Will this new giant change the world or show the world something radically new - I dont really think so. Will they influence and increase the convergence of Internet access with actual content - quite likely.

I just thought Case and Levin were so full of themselves and too high on their horses as to how the merger will be to save the world.

I would love to hear some of the other's opinions on this this merger and what it will mean for you & I and for the industry.
