When the sky has violet edges
You know that winter has been very long

That behind the snow and cutting woods
There may be brands of fire

Or the bluehound
With one-jeweled eye may still have buried

Sleeping flanks between the hills.

And it is good then to mark the sentences
By pausing

To wrap your hair up in a cap
And be a woman who bends slowly with the

Bending light
Taking careful stitches in to mend

And memorizing
How the blue veins cross and plot this frozen tract.
