Hiram: There has only been one optical switch, a prototype demonstrated by what is now called Lucent at SuperCom in New Orleans several years back. The digital switches utilized by almost all carriers have fiber optic interfaces that convert optics to electronics. Fiber is utilized in inter-office trunking because its high capacity makes it more cost effective and nearly all of the RBOC's new facilities use it exclusively. The local distribution plant utilizes fiber where it is economical but until the applications that require the high band width of fiber can pay their way you will not see much fiber to the curb. As far as cable companies kicking RBOC butts..get a life. Look at the service these companies provide now. They have neither the capital, know how or operational support systems to do so. When HFC systems and the applications that run on them are economically feasible the RBOC's will be there with quality. The cable companies have a hard time providing quality service with a "simple" common coax running to each home. Your comment that the stupid companies like TCI Cox etc is right on target. They probably have 95% of the cable market and I agree, except for their monoplies they would be history.
