my very sincere thanks again, Mike, for your thoroughgoing answer, and also for the link to that terrific set of interviews with chambers, roth and mcginn.
do you agree with the writers that the "battle" is between cisco and lucent and that nortel is too interested in protecting its voice networking rather than sailing forward into data, so that it is in the others' rear mirror? i think that's nonsense! seems to me that nortel is the leader in optics among the 3, and that qtera will be a big edge. the writers excuse mcginn's error in "skipping" OC-192 by going along with his explanation that by doing that he is now unbeatable in wdm. do you think a) that lu is now far ahead of nt in wdm; and b) that that means lu will win the war to be the network building leader even though it lost the current battle for bandwidth dominance, which was won by nortel by getting a huge lead in OC-192? my take on event b) was that nortel will widen its lead in optics because all network owners will now seek them out for bandwidth, and because those they built for will come back to them for maintenance and improvements. further, my take is that broad bandwidth optically is IT, and by leading in it Nortel is far and away the leader. the writers' concluding just the opposite shakes me up. am i wrong about nortel, or have they simply been charmed by the laid-back mr mcginn and turned off by the rough, tough mr roth?
i'm ready to be wrong. i'm not the true believer type. tell me, am i wrong about nortel?
