Thread, My heart simply bleeds for Rio Alto on this one. It could not happen to a more deserving company! Too bad Rio Alto did not have to go to hearing with McLeod as a complainer!

OIL AND GAS

The Government of Alberta is about to defend its right to issue
permits in the province's petroleum-rich lands, reported The Financial
Post. A group of First Nations bands recently initiated legal action
in an attempt to force the province to consult with the group before
approving petroleum exploration. The case began when Rio Alto
Exploration (RAX:TSE) was issued a permit for seismic work in northern
Alberta, and also names members of that company. The tribal council
claims that the government has a constitutional obligation to consult
with First Nations over activity on what it says are traditional
lands. However, the government says it has no obligation to confer
with the members of the First Nations, nor do the bands have the
treaty or aboriginal rights to pursue the matter. (Jan 12/00)
