To all CDDD longs :Update on Toolex Agreement CONSTELLATION 3D: Manufacturing agreement moves CD sized terabyte storage devices step nearer
JAN 6, 2000, M2 Communications - Constellation 3D, Inc. ("C3D"), a developer of fluorescent multi-layer card & disk ("FMC/D") technology and Toolex International N.V. ("Toolex"), a developer of optical data storage manufacturing processes and equipment, have agreed to enter into an exclusive cooperative effort to develop processes and equipment to facilitate production of devices incorporating C3D's FMC/D technology.
C3D's proprietary multi-layer fluorescent data storage technology overcomes the inherent limitations associated with conventional optical storage technologies (i.e. CD, DVD, etc), enabling data to be stored on multiple layers within the card or disk and offering huge increases in both storage capacity and data access speeds.
The agreement will combine Toolex's expertise with C3D's to enable the manufacturer of optical data storage equipment to prepare for the industrial production of cards, disks and drives incorporating the technology.
Industrialization of multi-layer disk systems and optical cards using the FMC/D concept requires development of several media production technologies, including thin layer technologies, embossing thin sheets, pit-filling technologies, thin sheet handling, laminating and assembling. The development of Thin Film Technology will focus on high volume FMC/D media production.
The planned first generation of cards and disks incorporating FMC/D include:
* a 20-layer FMC ClearCard(tm) in the form factor of a credit card having up to 10GB capacity;
* a 10-layer FMC ClearCard-R(tm) in the form factor of a credit card having up to 1GB capacity;
* a 10-layer FMD disk in the standard 120mm (CD & DVD) disk format having up to 140GB capacity.
The planned second and third generation cards and disks will have capacities up to and exceeding one terabyte (1,000 gigabytes). Rewritable versions of the disks and cards are also planned.
The parties have now commenced a full review of the associated technical issues, scheduled for completion on or before 1 March 2000, so that a comprehensive cooperative agreement can be signed immediately thereafter.
