KLA-Tencor profits up fivefold

SAN JOSE, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Chipmaker KLA-Tencor, which makes equipment used in the production of semiconductors, said on Thursday that second-quarter profits quintupled.
In the latest quarter, the company said earnings before special items jumped to $49 million, or 52 cents a share, up from $10 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier. KLA-Tencor was expected to earn 48 cents, according to the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call.
Revenues advanced 71 percent to $331 million from $193 million a year earlier.
Shares of KLA (KLAC: news, msgs) slipped 7/8 to 118 5/16 in recent trading.
Gross profit margins increased to 54 percent during the December quarter from 50 percent in the September quarter, as the company sold more high-profit goods. |
