Bink you're losing focus.

There's any number of ways you can make a home intelligent - solutions can be either simple or complex. But let's not debate about how you can do this.

The point is that if IDT chooses to get into any area of designing, installing, or managing the systems of residential homes it moves into the business of housing (call it what you like - construction, building, property management, consultancy, whatever).

If IDT chooses to do this because it sees an opportunity to get more telecommunication business through attainmnent of the status of exlusive provider, then there are better ways of doing this.

What does IDT want to be?

a) local/regional "intelligent home" consultant
b) free (money losing) isp
c) telco equipment manufacturer
d) internet content provider
e) international telecomms co.
f) holding company
g) all of the above

Consequences of choosing each of the above;
a) too many co's already doing this, not core strength
b) only pure players will gain current markcaps afforded to existing co's - even then only short term
c) lack of resources will prove disadvantage against the NT & LU's of the world. If they have any patents worth selling they should sell them
d) Does Yahoo, AOL, MSN mean anything to you?
e) This is where IDT's current strength lies
f) To do this IDT would need to get out of idea generation and operations. I can't see Howard doing this - he's just too egotistical.
g) IDT's resources are too stretched to go into multiple ventures. Net Income is below 1% of sales - that should say enough.
