Tony,

I will take a stab at answering these questions in 2 posts.
1. software impact, 2. hardware impact.

In this I will focus on software impact only. All of this is IMO. Plus
standard disclaimer applies.

1. Software traditionally lagged hardware introduction by a
siginificant amount. The reasons for this varied, 1. The software
companies don't have incentive to invest on new hardware platform
immediately, as they keep making money by support old (16bit & 32 bit)
applications. 2. The investment in development of applications for new
hardware will not pay off in immediate future. So they drag their feet
until customers force them to or they need to stay ahead of the crowd.

e.g. when new 32 bit cpus were introduced it took a good 6 to 8 years
before we saw the software industry catch up.

I would speculate the movement from 32 bits to 64 bits will take
longer.

However we have an advantage here, IA-64 has unix 64 bit applications
and OSs to give a jump start. Ultimately all desktop computing will be
64bit computing, it is just matter of time when that will happen.

Also the 2nd advantage is these small players are not tied to
windows to worry about competing with MSFT. They can capture the
market if they come out with a killer app. The strangle hold of
MSFT over software industry is not there for this IA-64 computing
environment. Which leaves the field wide open for anybody to become a
player.

e.g. All these IA-64 applications announcements based on Linux is
allowing these small player to come up with products without look over
their shoulders for MSFT.

Does this make sense?
