Top 10 Takeovers to Watch For in 2000
The biggest news so far this week was the announcement that AOL was merging with Time Warner. So who's next? Randy Barrett, editor of Inter@ctive Week has some ideas. On today's Power Lunch, Barrett shared with us his list of the top 10 takeovers to watch for this year. Take a look.

Top 10 Takeovers to Watch For:

1. Qwest Communications International - Expect a merger of equals with a big foreign telephone company such as Deutsche Telecom.

2. Time Warner Cable Systems - Time Warner has been absent from the cable property land grab of the past 18 months. Inter@ctive Week says to look towards Comcast, Cox Communications or Paul Allen to snatch the company up.

3. NextWave Telecom - The company filed for Chapter 11 and needs money quick. Investors Global Crossings and Liberty Media recently put $1.6 billion into the company and could be among possible buyers.

4. Exodus Communications - This Web-hosting provider remains profit-free and is losing more than $100 million per year. Inter@ctive Week says to expect someone big like Global Crossing or MCI Worldcom to buy Exodus to gain quick entry into the market.

5. Peapod - The Web grocer space is ready for a big shakeout. Peapod could be snatched up by another, larger player such as Home Grocer or Webvan.

6. Petstore.com/Petopia.com - Both online shops are running behind Pets.com, while PetsMart.com is coming on strong and backing its site with a brick-and-mortar network of stores. Expect Petstore.com and Petopia.com to be picked up by one of the larger online pet stores or a brick-and-mortar looking to buy an established specialty outlet.

7. Spring Tide Networks - It's a company that knows it's hot and is likely to hold out to cash in big in an IPO. Still, Lucent Technologies may be a likely buyer, no matter what.

8. Intelligent/Digital - A private company based in Atlanta, the company has developed a versatile platform for electronic exchanges. The company can be snatched up by Ariba or Commerce One.

9. Linuxcare - The Linux consolidation could continue with the takeover of Linuxcare by Red Hat or VA Linux Systems. A deal may happen soon.

10. 24/7 Media - CMGI and DoubleClick may look around the Web for ways to boost the traffic volume of their online advertising networks. Both companies may look towards 24/7 Media to do that. With a market value near $1.3 billion, the acquisition will not be cheap.
