I didn't think that Linux running on a Pentium could be a problem. Not even remotely a problem. My point was that if an application like Quicken Basic 98, for example happened to be optimized code for Pentium class machine (I don't know whether it is or not), and the OS (Linux is for 386 class) and Wine probably is also for a 386 machine with all of the hundreds of engine calls that a windows emulator implies, the optimized code of an application would still require a Pentium class machine to run at all. This situation seems to imply that the Linux machines of the future will be mostly Pentium class or better despite the fact that the bare OS could run on something less.

Alternatively, I wonder if Wine might also be compiled in optimized code, without breaking the rules?
