Funerals are for the living. It's a way of showing you cared. It's an enormously important social event in the lives of the people who loved the deceased, a chance to publicly pay their respect. It's a very human thing to do, to cherish and be unwilling to relinquish the body of the deceased. We see animals unwilling to leave the dead bodies of their mates, so I guess it's unfair to say "human." Maybe say "loving." We have burial sites thousands of years old, with the bodies dressed in their best clothes, painted in beautiful colors and strewn with flowers and buried with dishes of food and containers of beer and pipes of hallucinatory herbs and decked in their best jewelry. We don't leave our dead to be gnawed by the wolves.
