So, what type of person, what relationship with Suzanne, and what reason for the confidentiality ?

The most obvious: she could have been cheating on her boyfriend, perhaps with a married man. That'd explain the reason she'd never have mentioned this person to her friends. Of course, people involved in illicit relationships usually do talk about them to at least one intimate. And it's said that she kept a diary; you'd think she'd write about the affair, even if she called him "X".

As for motive, well, it'd be the same old banal one: he'd promised to marry her, she believed him, but now that graduation was only a semester away it seemed he wasn't gonna leave his wife after all. She threatened to tell the world; perhaps had been doing so for awhile. He silenced her.

If you wanna go the whole hog with this one, you could also assume she was pregnant. That might not even have shown up on an autopsy, as they wouldn't have been looking for it.

Note: this isn't an attempt to sully poor Suzanne's name. It probably didn't happen this way. Just one more scenario.
