Art (OT) -

Your observation that "Shares held by one company in another company generally show up on the balance sheet as assets at cost (not market value)" is, of course, factual, but an often misunderstood or overlooked item by those of us who are general dorks trying to understand a balance sheet. It is an enormous opportunity for mis-reporting assets one way or another -- honest, but misleading.

I wonder how many people who have tried to calculate the cash value of a company have been wrong by an order of magnitude due to this accounting practice.
