[Business] Korean Internet users top 10 million
The number of Korean Internet users surpassed the 10 million-mark as of November last year, according to I-Click, an Internet tracking firm.
The projection is based on its telephone survey of 10,000 people in the 13-49 age group across the nation, conducted between Nov. 1 and Nov.17.
The company said some 17 million people, or 70 percent of the total population in that age group, use computers. Among them, 10.5 million, or 37.8 percent, have logged on to the Web, while 6.77 million, or 24.3 percent, use e-mail as well.
The result differs from some earlier surveys conducted by other institutions, which estimated the number of Korean Internet users at about six million.
"Other surveys counted the number of subscribers to Internet service providers, but more people use the Web in other ways and they should be taken into consideration," the company said.
The survey also indicated some 920,000, or 3.3 percent, have used e-commerce in the past six months, purchasing products and services 2.8 times on average and their total expenditure is estimated to reach 202.9 billion won ($178 million).
Books are the most frequently purchased product on the Internet accounting for some 25 percent, followed by CDs, music albums and videos (13.7 percent), computer hardware (9.4 percent), household electronics goods (9.1 percent) computer software (8.2 percent), and audio devices (3.6 percent).
To connect to the Web, some 37 percent use home computers while 24.3 percent use PC game rooms, the survey said.
