John, The "I don't want to surf from my phone" remark realy shows that you don't get it. You can use any device - connnectivity is just that - a connnection. It does not force the device - I can use my laptop, my video phone - whatever. This is a strength for the cell phone industry to get into internet data access - flexibility and ubiquitous access. I think you'll do OK with Metricom in the short term. There is a lot of noise in the short term - wireless data plays such as Metricom, DSL and cable modems. Looking out though I don't see how the cellular providers will fail to capture the lion's share. One stop connectivity to the world, voice AND data - one low price! Hard to beat.
