VPIM is a standard for internet message exchange. As such, nobody owns the technology. It makes it possible to network different vendors VM products (assuming the vendor supports VPIM). I would expect that all major VM players will face intense market pressure to provide VPIM. It allows large companies to buy VM systems from more than one company. Previously VM networking has been proprietary. This prevented many companies from changing vendors, because they would have had to replace all systems worldwide. With VPIM, it is possible for a customer of Octel, to begin replacing Sierras systems with Centigram. It is, however, a double edge sword, because Centigram customers could replace VOiceMemos with Octel Sierras one-at-a-time.

Personally, I'd be sweating if I were Octel. The smaller companies like CGRM can now move into their turf. CGRM biggest threat is not from OCTL, but probably more from the NT-based VM companies such as AVT and ACVC
