Alan re<<<<will it be a nightmare in quicken to keep track of the weekly mark to market transactions on a shorted stock?>>>

I don't think so. While Quicken does not have a specific sell short action, you simply enter the transaction as a sale, it will show a negative market value which will be adjusted to whatever the new closing price is. So for example if the thing you're shorting falls 5%, when you run the numbers the market value will be 5% less negative than it was the last time. I may be making it sound more confusing but it's really no problem. One thing you want to note though is if you put the cash received into your brokerage account that it may not be the same as real cash so I would limit the amount of margin used to short. As far as the short funds they can be more annoying to figure in Quicken than than a short sale. This is because it will show as an wquity and you may need to both subtract it out plus subtract it a second time if it's a simple one beta short fund to get a good read on your equity allocation since it really removes exposure to equities rather than adds. It has the advantage that whatever it does functioally it can be looked at as a simple mutual fund. In the current market I've decided to use the short route as I want to be able to move during the day if developments warrant
