Not necessarily. They were friends. Maybe he invited her home for a drink. As soon as they got there, he said he had to call mom. Having done so, he killed Suzanne.

But there are a few problems with this. Much depends on the length of the phone call. Mom doesn't usually let you go after a couple of minutes. It's also unlikely that he did her in in his dorm room or apartment, which would have made the kind of mess somebody'd have noticed.

Looks as if Peter has a solid alibi, though his call to his mother was convenient.

His testimony does, however, suggest that he met Suzanne on campus and that they walked some distance before arriving at Phelps Gate. If true, this rules out any possibility that she was driven from her home to the gate. But if they were together for five or ten minutes, there must have been more conversation. What was it about?
