US UNDER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE IN ALBANIA TIRANA (15 Jan 2000) - US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Walter B. Slocombe paid on Friday a one-day visit to Albania to discuss with Albanian authorities bilateral relations and the situation in the region. Slocombe discussed with Albania's top officials, including President Rexhep Meidani, Prime Minister Ilir Meta and Defence Minister Luan Hajdaraga, on the efforts of the Albanian army to integrate in Euro-Atlantic structures, further US support to the army, and the situation in Kosovo. Meidani called for more US military presence in Albania, said a presidential aide adding that the President received assurances from the US top defence official that "an important group of US military experts will soon come to Albania in the framework of the NATO mission."
