Consumers Remain Wary of Personal Video Recorders 1/14/00 In the 12 months since TiVo (Sunnyvale, CA) and Replay Networks (Mountain View, CA) unveiled their personal video recorders (PVRs), the consumer electronics industry has recognized PVR technology as a necessary piece of the interactive television puzzle. Consumers, on the other hand, have yet to embrace PVRs, due to high retail prices and unfamiliar features, according to a new report from TechTrends Inc. (Boston).
Based on a survey of 1400 consumers, the study found that while most consumers are interested in PVR features such as program pausing, ad skipping, and personal channels, only 17% would be comfortable making a purchase without first seeing a product demonstration.
Another major challenge for PVR makers is price. Not surprisingly, the current price points of today's PVRs are limiting mass-market acceptance. While 86% of informed consumers would consider buying a PVR in the future, most are unwilling to pay more than $299 for the product.
The study also found that 58% of consumers would be less willing to purchase a PVR if their PC offered the same features. More than half of the respondents, 55%, would be more likely to purchase a PVR if it were combined with a satellite receiver, compared to only 12% for a PVR-cable box combination.
