I remember reading the answer to that question in some books last year, but I don't remember what it was. I think the bigger the better, within limits. A gallon size is good. You want to get at least one year old plants, but I would double-check in a book or maybe your state's cooperative extension first. I live four miles outside the Beltway in Fairfax County, Virginia, but we do have deer around here, just not in this neighborhood. Other neighborhoods that have big parkland areas have deer, a mile or two away.

We bought a lot of trees from Edible Landscaping just outside Charlottesville, and everything we planted has buds, except for the blackberries and grapes which the dog dug up. So I need something to protect the plants from the dog.
