Our neighbours have been using one of those "invisible fence" set-ups to contain their labrador retriever on the property. Their dog soon began to understand the relationship between the little marker flags and the probability of getting shocked if he wandered near to them. Once he had absorbed that bit of information, they bought a few extra flags to stick in the ground around any plants or trees that they didn't want the dog to disturb. That's enough to deter him from digging at anything or chewing on young saplings. Too bad deer aren't so easy to trick...
