replacement of worker issue is deeper a problem
here is a related problem experienced by me at my company

over the last year, my company absolutely refuses to hire workers
but the business grows, the work increases
important: the clerical work grows disproportionately
new business information systems are put into place
these new systems must be run

the business systems are akin to your example of new machines
your guys simply run them, often dumbing down, not mentally challenging

I installed a labor scheduling system for over 800 stores last year
my promotion was refused for cost reasons (absurd)
my duties were radically dumbed down
my job centered upon running the system, maintaining the databases, debugging programs as changes took place

instead of promotion and moving onto new similar worthwhile challenges, my job duties were tantamount to a demotion

as US companies insist on keeping costs down, they unfortunately force their workers to operate not only machines but information systems... each involves a dumbing down of job duties... it is sad, and fosters greater boredom

this dumbing down led me to resign from Staples early
I was going to remain until the spring
but further discouragement came from a reduced annual bonus

I am sure that many people can identify with my frustration
