What about writing OTM covered calls on a portion of your portfolio? Mildly risky, but gives a monthly income with no margin collateral held and without having to cash in stock with resulting early withdrawal penalties or tax penalties.

Not that I'm anywhere near the retirement problem yet, but someday I'll use that strategy
