i have gotten msword to open rapidly once again via the desktop icons. i believe there is some sort of conflict with realplayer. no way would i understand what that connection might be <g3>. a realplayer icon persists in appearing in my systray (despite using msconfig to uncheck it in the startup folder) whenever i use realplayer. seems that when it is there, the msword icon prob kicks in. i also began to encounter a dialog on shutdown that said "real audio internal messages" and that the program was busy and was not responding (to my shut down command). i know that the blackice upgrade i just installed dealt with some realplayer issues. so i'm kinda' jumping around here, but at least i'm narrowing it down. i may go for a reinstall on the realplayer program. i had G2 and it was fine, then i was prompted to upgrade to realplayer7. sometimes these apps get too complicated and it's difficult to keep up with what upgrade is required. ramble ramble :) mark
