RE: What are they thinking?

I don't know if they are. Intel has made a huge effort to segment the market into PIII on top... e.g. the PIII only websites, and it has worked. Gateway stated that people were calling in to buy PIII 450's and didn't want to get the Celerons they were instead offered. Those people are turning around and buying emachines, going to SD shops, buying Athlons etc. Lots of money left on the table by Intel not being able to manage their supply... AMD is capitalizing (correctly IMHO) by snapping up marketshare (and generating brand loyalty in the process) and it is being very aggressive at that. AMD knows that even if they don't get every last dollar now because of their lower prices, their marketshare is all important. Because once your marketshare drops below a certain point the domino chain begins to fall and noone will want (to carry for sale)an AMD product. In addition there's less brand loyalty in the PC sector... at least AAPL had a user base that would stick with them through thick and thin... AMD's base fled over to INTC as soon as they realized dual Celerons were possible.

If Intel had managed their supply better many Athlon sales could have been Cumine sales. Intel isn't paranoid enough... else they'd be ramping faster... they'd be using the equipment AMD is currently using to make Athlons to make Cumines. With their warchest this should have not been a problem. 12.5% to 17% could have been 12.5% to 8%.

IMHO poor management
