back to tomatoes... :-)

After years and years of growing hybrids like Early Girl, Big Boy, Better Boy, et all..."the standards,"...last year I grew Brandywine, an Amish heirloom reputed (by Burpee or some major seed producer) as having "the best flavor" of all beefsteak-type tomatoes.

Um...it wasn't great. The vines weren't as prolific, I had few fruits (compared to the hybrids) and the taste wasn't all that great. Very disappointing.

Sadly -- and unromatic as it is -- I now believe that the hybrids really ARE better, and certainly more "fruitful." I think there's a "old is REAL, old is BETTER" mindset that simply isn't true, in many cases.

On a similar note, the best apple I've ever had was a Spartan -- a recent cross (I forget of which varieties) that had a champagne-like sweetness and crispness; awesome.
